My love of smoothies has been well-documented on this blog throughout the years, and my love for a good, creamy smoothie is as strong as it’s ever been.

I honestly think a well-crafted smoothie can be one of the best options for a snack or a light meal at any time of the day. Not only will it look and taste like a treat if it’s made right, it can also be a nutritional powerhouse!

Early this year, I expanded my appreciation for smoothies to include smoothie bowls: extra hearty smoothies served in a bowl and eaten with a spoon!

Smoothie bowls are made with yogurt that’s typically been jazzed up with extracts, warm spices, sweeteners, protein powder, or peanut butter. They’re often artfully topped with some variety of chopped or sliced whole fruits, berries, and nutritional seeds.

I follow a really eclectic group of folks on YouTube, some of whom really focus on healthy eating, and late last year a few of them were sharing about “dessert-style” smoothie bowls. These creations inevitably included yogurt, seeds, fruit, and a measure of sweetened breakfast cereals or even bite-sized candy like M&M’s.

Now this concept of a smoothie bowl for dessert really grabbed my attention! Y’all already know that recipes or dishes that are a little bit good and a little bit bad are right up my alley. Finally, one day back in January of this year, I decided to create a version (or two) of a dessert smoothie bowl for myself.

On hand I had plain Greek yogurt, apples, protein powder, chia seeds, and ground flax for the good portion. I also had pure maple syrup as well as sugar-free maple-flavored syrup, ground cinnamon and lightly salted peanuts. I knew I wanted to mix in a naughty little sweet treat as well, and at first I was eyeballing white chocolate chips, but then I found a mason jar half-filled with Heath bar bits that were just begging for some attention! Toffee bits were seriously a perfect complement for everything else I had gathered. It was a done deal.

At first I was going to call this the Candy Apple Protein Smoothie Bowl, but then I decided to be a bit more precise, and this Spiced Maple Toffee Apple Smoothie Bowl was born! I have made this tasty smoothie bowl many, many times to date, sometimes for breakfast and definitely for dessert.

It’s craveworthy but packed with protein and very satisfying. I hope you’ll enjoy this flavorful autumn-inspired protein smoothie bowl as much as I do.

🍎🍏 Fun fact: the same crunchy candy-coated apples Americans call candy apples are called toffee apples in the UK!
