We all love a nice, cold drink on a really warm day. Something about a chilled glass in your hand really helps to take the edge off during the summer months. Ice water is nearly always the best choice on a summer scorcher, but sometimes folks just need a little flavor and color in their glasses! Fresh-squeezed lemonade is always a close second choice to water for me during the summer, it’s just so good!
Lately this incredibly refreshing, homemade version of Sonic Drive In’s popular Ocean Water drink has been our chilled beverage of choice. As with so many notable restaurant recipes, I didn’t realize until recently just how easy it is to make a version of this tasty blue beverage at home. Honestly, the inspiration to give this drink recipe a try started after a slew of unsolicited suggestions for this eye-catching drink drizzled into my Pinterest feed.
Thankfully Pinterest’s wildly successful streak of knowing what I need in my life before I do continues with this drink recipe!
Before we moved out to the boonies, we used to visit our neighborhood Sonic Drive-In from time to time to get a quick afternoon snack or ice cream treats for dessert. Sometimes I ordered a delicious hot fudge sundae or strawberry cheesecake milkshake, but more often I would order a large Ocean Water and some crispy onion rings. The kids loved the crispy corn dogs and chocolate shakes.
Now that we live so far from town, it’s been a true treat for us to be able to enjoy this delightfully tropical drink without making a 30-mile round trip to pick one up. And, of course, no matter how far you live from the nearest town, copycat recipes are always great way to save a little money.
How to make a copycat sonic ocean water
All that you’ll need to make this fizzy, blue, tropical drink for yourself is a large glass partially filled with crushed ice, lemon-lime soda, coconut-flavored syrup, blue food coloring, and maraschino cherries. Maraschino cherries aren’t completely necessary for this beverage recipe, but I do highly recommend them for the whole eat-with-your-eyes and joy factors!
To be exact here, I typically use a 12-ounce can of diet lemon-lime soda, Jordan’s Skinny Syrups brand coconut-flavored syrup, and a drop or two of blue food coloring (but, honestly sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t on the food coloring) when I make my personal glass of this homemade ocean water drink. I prefer to keep this copycat drink sugar-free by using a store-purchased, sugar-free syrup.
However, when it comes to drinking sugar-free drinks or not, you’ve got to do you. Torani brand Coconut Syrup is always a good choice for a regular, sweetened coconut-flavored syrup, and of course, if you prefer to make a homemade coconut-flavored simple syrup, you can go that route too.
I sure hope you try this sparkling, Caribbean ocean-colored beverage this summer, and I hope it helps you beat the heat at home and keep a little extra change in your pocket.
Happy sipping, y’all!! ππΉ
