When I heard that the Imperial Sugar Company and some other amazing sponsors were celebrating a week of all-things-chocolate and recruiting bloggers to share recipes for an event called #Choctoberfest, I immediately knew I wanted to participate! And after I made one little loaf of this double chocolate buttermilk quick bread, I knew it would be the first recipe I shared this week.

This chocolate snack bread quickly became a family favorite treat and my kids especially enjoy it (anything they can pluck melt-y chocolate chips from is a guaranteed source of joy, y’all!). This quick bread recipe is super easy, rich in flavor and it will satisfy any chocolate craving in a hurry. Another thing I love about this recipe is that although it’s name sounds crazy decadent, the end product is not super duper sweet like a chocolate cake would be. However, if you want to try a version of this double chocolate buttermilk bread that is a bit more luscious, just sub milk chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chips listed in the recipe and that should do the trick!

In this recipe, I use equal portions of flavorful light brown sugar and granulated sugar and I can’t say enough about how important quality ingredients are to me when it comes to my homebaked goods. In my kitchen, sugar products from the Imperial Sugar Company are honest-to-goodness pantry staples. In fact, Imperial Sugar is a brand name I grew up seeing used everyday by both my mother and my grandmother in their kitchens! In my opinion, the quality of their sugar is consistently the best. The fact that all of their products are non-gmo and made with the highest quality pure cane sugar undoubtedly plays a part in that success!

I don’t think you could expect anything less than perfection from a business that is celebrating it’s 175th year in operation, like the Imperial Sugar Company. Their brand is truly a Texas tradition and here’s just a little bit about the company’s history.

In 1843, along the banks of Oyster Creek in what would later become Sugar Land, Texas, the Williams brothers built a mule-powered sugar mill, began grinding sugar cane, and a Texas legacy was born. The Imperial Sugar Company is the one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the State of Texas and was founded by one of the original 100 families brought to the state by Stephen F. Austin. How cool is that?!

Imperial Sugar provides high-quality sugar and sweetener products. Their family of products includes granulated sugar, light and dark brown sugar, free-flowing sugar, powdered sugar, sugar shakers and Steviacane® (Stevia + sugar blend).

I think it’s worth mentioning that as the Imperial Sugar Company has provided sugar and sweetener products for over 100 years, of course they’ve also published lots of delicious, time-tested recipes! Be sure to check out the Imperial Sugar Company’s website for great recipes and seasonal inspiration. Presently, they have a collection of festive (and spooky!) Halloween treats and crafts live on their site!

This is a sponsored post, but I was not financially compensated for this content and all opinions are my own. However, all the sugar products for the recipes made during this week of #Choctoberfest were generously provided by the Imperial Sugar Company. Thank you!
Double Chocolate Buttermilk Quick Bread      printable recipe

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 40-50 minutes
Yield: (1) 8×4-inch loaf

  • 1-3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon instant expresso powder
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (I used Imperial brand)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (I used Imperial brand)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Pre-heat the oven to 350°. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, expresso powder and stir well. Set bowl aside.
2.  In another medium-size bowl, whip butter with a mixer or whisk until light and fluffy (about one minute). Add in both sugars and mix well until butter and sugar are creamed. Add in the buttermilk and extract and stir until wet ingredients are well-combined.
3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients into to the large bowl. Mix with a wooden spoon until a thick batter comes together. Fold in the chocolate chips. Prepare a 8×4 inch loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray and transfer batter to the prepared pan. Spread batter evenly into the pan.

4. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Place pan with double chocolate buttermilk quick bread on a cooking rack and allow it to cool for 15 minutes. Remove loaf from pan and allow it to cool 15 minutes more.

5. Serve with fresh brewed coffee or a cup of hot tea and enjoy!
