Perfectly golden chocolate chip cookies are baked to perfection with a mini pretzel baked into their tops. The cookies are eye-catching and with bits of gooey chocolate chips visible in the tender cookies. The cookies are served with milk on a wooden cutting board. A blue and white checkered kitchen towel is neatly folded off to the side.

These eye-catching Chocolate Pretzel Cookies are one of my proudest baking experiments. These pretty cookies are the result of a little bit of baking trial and error that went right!! They are scrumptious little sweet and salty delights, with a satisfying variety of textures too.

One day last year, I was doing a pantry clean-out, and I decided to make some chocolate chip cookies, as I had a ridiculous amount of chocolate chips on hand… six brand new bags, to be exact (hoard chocolate chips much? Yes, thank you. I do.). I also had an unopened, completely neglected bag of mini-pretzels that needed some attention. We had purchased them to make chocolate-covered pretzels over the Thanksgiving school break, well; that little snack project did not happen.

To be fair, at the heart of this recipe is my all-time favorite recipe for chocolate chip cookies. It’s a recipe I’ve been making for over a decade, and my family is very familiar with it. When I was putting the cookie dough on the baking sheet, I decided to press a few of those adorable salty little twists onto the tops of some of the cookies.

Once the very first dozen of chocolate chip pretzel cookies came out of the oven, I was immediately enamored with how lovely they were. I could only hope the flavor combo was as good as it looked, and was it ever!

After the kids visually inspected the cookies and asked me why the heck I stuck a pretzel into the tops of their favorite chocolate chip cookies, they each just took a bite. The taste test sealed the deal.

These funny little pretzel-topped cookies were an instant hit.

Perfectly golden chocolate chip cookies are baked to perfection with a salted mini pretzel baked into their tops. The cookies look pretty on the wooden charcuterie board and a small individual milk bottle is filled with cold milk, ready for enjoying.

Not every twist I attempt on our old recipe favorites is a hit; in fact, many of them have been outright flops. My kids, especially my daughter, generally do not like their favorite foods to be altered in any way.

So, I do dabble with my established recipes, but with great caution… and a freezer that’s at least minimally stocked with convenience foods for weekday scheduling emergencies and as a dinnertime plan B!

I’ve never been the “go to bed hungry” or “clean your plate” mom; I could never be that person. Especially not when I messed with the recipe that I know they like. I’ll always believe that attempts to freshen up old stand-bys is worthwhile, but the kids can certainly enjoy their comforting frozen nuggets and fries if an experiment doesn’t work out.

Tender, golden chocolate chip pretzel cookies are stacked and ready to served on a wooden cutting board. A blue and white tea towel is folded next to the warm cookies. Bits of melty chocolate chips are visible throughout the perfectly baked chocolate chip cookies and the toasted pretzel on top makes the sweet and salty treats extra tempting.

These rich Chocolate Chip Pretzel Cookies are always a welcome and comforting sight for my fam, especially as an after-school snack. They are a certifiable family favorite these days. They may even be requested more often than just my plain old chocolate chip cookies now, and I think it’s pretty cool how this little recipe has worked out so well.

This may be my signature cookie? You know, because we should all have a signature cookie!!

We sure hope you enjoy this recipe too! Be sure to make a batch for your holiday cookie trays this year; I just know they will be a sensation with your friends and family!

Happy baking, y’all!! πŸͺπŸ₯›πŸ’–

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted

  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • 3 tablespoons milk

  • 1-1/3 + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips (or any combination of chips you prefer)

  • optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

  • 24 mini pretzels with salted tops

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350Β°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick silicon mats.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine sugars with the melted butter. Stir well. Add in the baking soda, extract, beaten egg and milk. Stir mixture until smooth.
  • Add in the flour, one half at a time until a thick batter forms. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts, if using any. Use a cookie scoop or place rounded generous tablespoons of cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Lightly press one mini-pretzel into the top of each unbaked cookie (full tutorial video is below for reference).
  • Bake cookies for 12-13 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Remove the cookies from the oven and allow cookies to cool on a rack. Repeat process until all the cookie dough is used.
  • Enjoy these sweet and salty cookies with ice cold milk, fresh-brewed coffee or your favorite hot tea!
